Homeschool Options in Tennessee
Tennessee law provides parents with multiple options for homeschooling their children.
Independent Homeschooling
Parents may independently homeschool their children by registering with their local education agency (LEA), as outlined in Tennessee Code Annotated § 49-6-3050. Parents who choose this option must meet state educational requirements, maintain attendance records, administer required assessments, and submit attendance documentation to the school district at the end of each school year.
Church-Related or Umbrella School Homeschooling
Parents may also homeschool through a church-related school or approved umbrella program as defined in Tennessee Code Annotated § 49-50-801. Families choosing this option must provide Maryville City Schools with verification of enrollment from the church-related or umbrella school.
Church-related and umbrella schools are responsible for establishing and monitoring their own record-keeping, attendance, and testing requirements in accordance with Tennessee law. These schools are required to maintain attendance records, which may be reviewed by authorized school district personnel as permitted by state law.
