It’s National Education Week and students at Maryville City Schools are getting a special treat to celebrate.

This week, students of the school district will be receiving free ice cream during lunch, served up by district office employees and administration.

Late Tuesday morning, the kindergarten class at Foothills Elementary got a sweet surprise when they found out they would be getting their choice of a free ice cream with their lunch.

Students gathered around a cooler full of ice cream and popsicles, while Special Education Director Melanie Davidson and Family Resource Center Assistant Alexis Manges helped pass out the desserts to the children.

For the rest of the week, all schools within the district will be celebrating the week with either an ice cream dessert or little trinkets for student bodies with multiple food allergies.

National Education Week, also known as American Education Week, takes place Nov. 17-21 and “{span}celebrates the wide range and incredible team of support professionals who help our students succeed-from paraeducators and clerical staff to bus drivers, technical specialists and students service workers,” according to the National Education Association’s website.
