Second-grade students filled the Foothills Elementary School gym Tuesday morning shouting things like, “Bookmarks for sale,” “Keychains, get your keychains,” and the occasional, “Please buy this!”
The students were getting a lesson in economics at their annual Second Grade Market Day.
Students decided on what products they wanted to sell, crafted them and then “sold” them for tickets. Slime, beaded bracelets and keychains seemed to be the more popular products for the students to make, as well as sweet treats.
One student made plantable bookmarks out of homemade paper and seeds. Products weren’t the only thing on the menu; some students opted for offering services like nail painting or shoulder massages.
The students all started out with 20 tickets and could earn more through selling their items.
“Shoppers” consisted of parents, school staff and students. The hopeful entrepreneurs received breaks throughout the event so that they could also shop for items, which cost between one and three tickets.
FES Second Grade Teacher Melissa Sonner said, “We’ve done this probably over 20 years and it’s just such a fun way to learn economics with goods and services. They determine the name of their booth, they determine their price …”
Sonners said in preparation for the event, the teachers talk to the students about pricing their goods and services — items set high may not sell while items set low may sell out.
FES Teaching Assistant Stephanie Moss, whose daughter, Alice, was participating in Market Day, said that Alice had been looking forward to the day since last year.
Alice decided to make slime for her product, which was almost sold out.
“It’s a great learning experience for them. They look forward to it; they love it.” Moss said.
